Communications platform as a service is the next wave of unified communications as it makes it easier to integrate communications into business applications.
"It fulfills the vision of CEBP," said ZK Research principal analyst Zeus Kerravala. CEBP, communications-enabled business processes, is the decades-old concept of the ability to integrate communications with applications to optimize business workflows.
Communications platform as a service (CPaaS) is cloud-based middleware that allows developers to integrate communications capabilities into web and mobile apps. The technology allows organizations to deploy features like SMS, voice, video and SIP trunking in a matter of hours.
"Competitive advantage is no longer based on a company having the best product, the cheapest price or even the best people," Kerravala said. "It's based on an organization's ability to adapt to change."
In an increasingly digital world, the cycle of business disruption is happening much more quickly and organizations need to keep up. But employees and customers alike don't want more applications on their phones or desktops; they want more functionality built into the applications they already use, he said.
Because CPaaS is cloud-based, the process to integrate communications becomes simpler, more cost effective and easier to maintain for organizations.
