Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise gives SMB communications a boost

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise has made several enhancements to its unified communications portfolio for SMBs. The improvements are centered on mobility.

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise's latest update of its unified communications product line gives small to midsized businesses the choice of voice and mobile applications that can be enabled from a single box.

The latest version of the OpenTouch for small and midsized businesses (SMBs) portfolio, introduced this week includes an updated OmniPCX Office Rich Communication Edition (RCE) communication server. Version 10.1 supports VoIP and digital communications, and can accommodate up to 200 users.

Within OmniPCX Office RCE is PIMphony, a new communication application for tablets and laptops. PIMphony provides a tiled interface that mirrors Windows 8, so users can slide between softphone, presence and IM applications, said Paul Durham, senior strategic solutions architect for Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise (ALE) USA.

PIMphony is being extended to mobile devices in the form of the OpenTouch Conversation app. The app gives mobile users access to PIMphony desktop features, including voice, presence and call history. OpenTouch Conversation includes a VoIP mode for making calls over Wi-Fi networks. The app is available for iOS, Android and now Windows Phone devices.

ALE also introduced a deskphone. The 8242 DECT Handset has a large color screen and a USB port. The deskphone includes ALE's new Get Call switching feature that lets users move calls to a mobile device with one click.

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise is providing channel partners with a tool called SMB Sales Assistant to help sell the UC portfolio. The software shows potential customers products based on their requirements.

ALE introduced its OpenTouch suite of unified communications products for SMBs last year. The platform gives SMBs a combination of business capabilities and consumer-like communication tools, Durham said. The platform is available in the cloud or as on-premises software.
