Push-to-talk implementation using SIP protocol

How can you implement push-to-talk using SIP protocol without using a push-to-talk server? Read Carrie Higbie's suggestions for our readers in this expert response.

I am planning to implement push to talk feature using Sip protocol without using push to talk server. What are my options?
My suggestion would be that you talk to your VoIP/PBX supplier to see what options are available for your system. I am not aware of any provider that will let you do this without a server.
