Delay with VLANs

When deploying VoIP in a LAN network with the IP phone and PC running in a single cable, is delay affected by the number of VLANs for the IP phones? Can I use as many VLANs I want or is it better to keep it to a minimum? How about IP phones located in cascaded switches? Will there be significant delay/packet loss?

On a switched network you are a bit luckier than the older cascaded hub networks due to the switching mechanism. That said, you can over administrate and slow down your network. The move has to be examined and the larger the address tables, the greater the load you place on your switches. The other side is the cost in administrative time each time you move a user. Studies say that about 40 percent of all users move within an organization in a year. When you have too many VLANS you could in effect slow down the network based on the number of addresses that it will need to maintain and the amount of cache that is in your switches and routers. As for the delay, that really depends on the health of your network. You should check your switches and see if they already exhibit these issues or use a Certified Infrastructure Auditor to assist. You will want to be sure that your cable plant and your switches are in good shape. Adding voice on a cascaded switch will not necessarily cause delay and/or packet loss. If the switches understand QoS or whatever quality attributes that your voice gear requires, you should be fine if the network is healthy.
