A stand-alone RTCP is often customized to meet the requirements of a specific department, agency or enterprise. Alternatively, an RTCD may be embedded in a common business application, enabling functions such as click-to-talk and presence status displays in Web pages, documents, databases and spreadsheets.

Features typically found on an RTCD include:

• presence detection
• instant messaging (IM)
• contact lists
• network connections
• e-mail
• Web browsers
• voice over IP (VoIP)
• videoconference
• file transfer
• backup
• data recovery.

The growing use of RTCDs has brought increasing attention to privacy issues concerning document sharing and record retention. Often, the distinction between personal and business communication is not well established. While a business has a legitimate need to monitor and maintain records of all communications affecting the operation of the enterprise, it may be difficult at times to clearly differentiate a business communication from a personal one.

RTCD products include Microsoft Office Communicator and Lotus Sametime.
