- A real-time communications dashboard (RTCD) is a unified communications interface designed to facilitate efficient, convenient communication among users in a business environment. Real-time communications (RTC) is any mode of telecommunications in which all users can exchange information instantly or with negligible latency. A well-engineered, properly deployed RTCD can minimize wasted time and overhead by allowing users to reach desired people at optimal times.
A stand-alone RTCP is often customized to meet the requirements of a specific department, agency or enterprise. Alternatively, an RTCD may be embedded in a common business application, enabling functions such as click-to-talk and presence status displays in Web pages, documents, databases and spreadsheets.
Features typically found on an RTCD include:
The growing use of RTCDs has brought increasing attention to privacy issues concerning document sharing and record retention. Often, the distinction between personal and business communication is not well established. While a business has a legitimate need to monitor and maintain records of all communications affecting the operation of the enterprise, it may be difficult at times to clearly differentiate a business communication from a personal one.
RTCD products include Microsoft Office Communicator and Lotus Sametime.
