DEFINITION -

CoIP (communications over Internet Protocol) is a set of standards defining the transmission of multimedia over the Internet. CoIP can be considered an expansion of VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) to include text, images, video and other forms of digital data as well as voice information.

CoIP, which uses the same overall set of parameters as VoIP, is an aspect of widespread and ongoing efforts in the IT industry to attain convergence of all forms of communications and broadcasting in a single medium.

The abbreviation CoIP is sometimes used to stand for conferencing over Internet Protocol (H.323). H.323 defines a set of standards designed to provide consistency in audio, video and data packet transmissions in the event that a local area network (LAN) can not provide guaranteed service quality (QoS).
