TechTarget readers hungry for VoIP |

A recent poll of 467 TechTarget readers revealed that there will be lots of action in the world of voice implementations this year.
Voice over IP (VoIP) is set for vigorous growth as users begin to embrace unified messaging. And despite the fact that cost remains a concern, VoIP will gain significant momentum among large companies, according to TechTarget's Networking Purchasing Intentions (Spring 2006) poll of SearchNetworking.com, SearchEnterpriseVoice.com, and SearchMobileComputing.com readers.
When asked to describe spending plans for voice equipment, readers said there would be an increase, especially among large companies, that weighed in at 68%. Meanwhile, 46% of midsized companies and 44% of small companies planned an increase in spending on voice equipment.
Among large companies, more than 80% said they would purchase VoIP phones, almost 70% are looking at VoIP services, nearly 60% are considering IP PBX purchases, and about the same number are planning to invest in voice gateways.
Where purchasing plans for IP-based applications are concerned, voice over wireless LANs and videoconferencing were the most popular, with 39% of the vote. Web conferencing weighed in with 37%, video and multimedia applications captured 33%, and unified messaging rang in with 29%.
These findings aren't exclusive to TechTarget's study. A recent poll by the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) similarly revealed that converged communication solutions are top of mind for IT leaders.
Of the nearly 2,200 respondents, 34% said convergence solutions such as VoIP telephony and unified messaging will have the greatest impact on the IT industry this year.
Coming in a close second for most significant issue, security solutions were deemed to have the greatest impact by 33% of respondents. Rounding out the top five are RFID technology (19%), virtualization technology (9%), and service-oriented architecture (about 5%).
CompTIA's findings are consistent with those of a year ago. A study it published last year indicated that 60% of small and midsized businesses planned to increase or evaluate their usage of converged voice and data communications solutions before the end of 2006.
