Hospitals continue to find their voice

Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare is on course to wirelessly enable all of its facilities throughout Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois. The network will be based on Trapeze Networks Wireless LAN (WLAN) Mobility System and will include 1,400 Trapeze Mobility Points throughout. Phase one of the two-year deployment includes support for wireless services to 200 employees who use laptops, tablet PCs, and PDAs. The company will eventually deploy voice-over-wireless phones, a service that is rising in popularity among healthcare companies because it offers lower-cost, quicker communication among healthcare workers.

VoIP without wires

Wireless vendor Cognio announced an upgrade to its Spectrum Expert spectrum management platform to include support for new services such as wireless VoIP. With Spectrum Expert, IT managers now have the ability to create detailed device charts that quickly show the impact of specific devices on each Wi-Fi channel and how they are affecting channel and overall network performance. Managers can use this knowledge to remove, move, shield, or replace specific devices to minimize impact and maximize Wi-Fi network performance. More communication, fewer worms Verizon Business is opening up workplace communication while locking down Internet-based threats with the just-launched Hosted Secure Instant Messaging Service. The company's new IM service lets users communicate in real time while maintaining a secure infrastructure and implementing policies for employee use of IM. One of Hosted Secure IM's key features is its ability to help stop Internet-based threats such as worms, viruses and spim (unsolicited chat messages from unknown users) before they enter a company's network.

SMB's voice to scale up

Carrier Access Corp. and Narad Networks Inc. teamed up to offer a scalable VoIP solution for the small to midsized business (SMB) market. Carrier Access makes switched broadband access solutions; Narad is a provider of broadband communications equipment. The solution includes the Carrier Access voice gateway product, which combines Quality of Service (QoS)-based IP voice and data services such as Transparent LAN, data backup, and storage solutions over the existing HFC network. That technology has been combined with the Narad Broadband Access Network (NBAN) Ethernet-over-Coax infrastructure solution that supports carrier class QoS requirements needed to reliably transport voice. The technology can scale to serve hundreds of business customers requiring T1 type capacity.

Smooth migration for Voice over Packet (VoP)

AudioCodes and QUALCOMM have teamed up to offer a solution for VoIP calls using the EV-DO (Rev. A) specification. AudioCodes' Mediant media gateway now supports the VoIP Enhanced Variable Rate Coder (EVRC) codec developed by QUALCOMM. This enables VoIP handsets to communicate transparently over EV-DO (Rev. A) networks with AudioCodes' media gateways, facilitating VoIP calls between legacy access subscribers and subscribers using technology that supports EV-DO (Rev. A). Smart Blanking technology is a way to achieve Discontinuous Transmission in packet-based communications, which results in increased capacity and greater efficiency in the network. These EV-DO (Rev. A)-based technology advances, combined with AudioCodes' media gateways, will allow operators to benefit from an extended network capacity, high voice quality, and a wider array of VoIP applications.
