Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) plays an important role within unified communications (UC) in that SIP is in fact a rendezvous protocol for many forms of communication (voice, video, and IM). As such, SIP can act as the glue that binds multiple media types and provides seamless transition from one media type to another.
In addition, SIP is consistently extended to adapt to other areas of UC such as mobility, location-based services, and presence. This extensibility really allows SIP to provide a lot of functional building blocks for a successful UC architecture.
