The issue of accurately conveying location information for E911 and
other reasons is being worked on aggressively within the Internet
Engineering Task Force (IETF). There are drafts available on
how to convey location information using SIP. How a device (such as a
softphone) learns of its location is still being worked on.
VoIP applications are growing rapidly and are driving the communications
market. Softphones have become very useful and popular applications.
This issue of properly learning and conveying location to emergency
services will be properly addressed.
