SIP is a technology that was developed to carry VoIP traffic. It sort of mimics the POTS network by providing a session for the call to assist with routing and disassembly, reassembly. There are a bunch of SIP vendors and it is expected to be the biggest carrier of VoIP traffic. There is currently work in the IETF to help with some portions of the SIP standard that were interpreted differently by vendors – so all you have to do is to check their interoperability pages to find out what equipment works and plays well with others. The older means of doing VoIP was H.323. SIP stands for session initiation protocol. There are five quality of service settings used through the conversation.
