SIP is the current VoIP protocol of choice. All major suppliers of communications equipment for the carrier and enterprise markets currently have or are working on SIP based solutions. SIP is a text based protocol that is very similar to HTTP. Much of the Internet infrastructure that deals with HTTP has been readily adapted to support SIP (e.g., HTTP load balancers). SIP allows sessions to be created for any kind of media (e.g., voice, video or fax) and sessions can easily be updated with additional types of media. SIP also integrates presence and instant messaging capabilities and can allow for whiteboard and other applications. An additional key benefit is that SIP is also extensible so future additions can easily be made. There will no doubt be many new and interesting enhancements to SIP in the future.
