QUESTION POSED ON: 16 February 2004
I am planning to set up a VoIP termination system using a Cisco 2610 equipped with a VWIC MFT-T1 connected to a Channel Bank type ADTRAN TSU 600e (populated with 24 FXO ports), TSU 600E will be connected to only 12 C0 lines, like this:

PSTN
12 CO lines ---Adtran---T1---Cisco 2600---Internet

I am new to ADTRAN, so I am asking if it needs a configuration to communicate to Cisco router. If you can provide me with sample configuration regarding ADTRAN and Cisco router 2610, it will be very appreciated, because this case is very critical to me!

Secondly, I could not get the type of signaling running on the CO LINES (is it loopstart or groundstart) but I could say that they are normal analog lines that come form telecom (I could connect a phone to any line and I can talk), so in a similar case what will be the signaling type? Should I busy out the unused timeslots on the Cisco T1 interface?

I don't have sample configuration information but I do have some points you might want to consider. If you have a T1 running PPP or Frame relay connected from the Cisco 2600 to the ISP you will want to recover clock on the Cisco 2600 (e.g., 'clock source line primary' for the T1 controller connected to the ISP). If you are connecting to the Internet directly on an Ethernet interface on the Cisco 2600 then your clock source may be set otherwise. Channel banks are typically set to recover clock so the Cisco 2600 should source the clock to the channel bank.

If the analog lines you are using work with a standard phone set (meaning you can dial out and connect a call), they are Loop Start lines. The T1 signaling protocol must also be set to Loop Start between the Adtran and the Cisco 2600. To do this on the Cisco 2600 you need to have a CAS Group configured for Loop Start. You can choose to only include the first 12 channels in the CAS group.
