Asterisk is an open source IP solution which offers a good number of features. Most implementations of Asterisk are using SIP, meaning that multiple different SIP accessories such as phones and PSTN gateways can be used with the solution. If you don't mind setting up a lot of parameters in configuration files and can make do with minimal documentation and news group support, then you can likely do well with Asterisk. Note that you'll have to manage your other SIP accessories separately. Some people using Asterisk rely on consultants and pay them for configuration and customization of the solution for more complex applications; so consider all of these things when comparing the 'cost' of implementing Asterisk versus other IP PBX solutions.
