What are your suggestions to improve voice quality over VoIP?

I am using VoIP gateway to communicate between offices, but I am not satisfied with the voice quality. What are your suggestions to improve voice quality?

There could be a number of factors affecting the voice quality, such as the amount of traffic on the line or the configuration of the gateway. You could try using a sniffer, such as Ethereal to look at the traffic and at the voice (RTP) stream. This would help you quantify any problems. You'll likely want to use G.729 for compressed voice on the VoIP gateway. If you are using G.723 or some other lower bit rate codec, your voice quality will not be as good. You should also make sure to disable voice activity detection (VAD) if it is enabled on the VoIP gateway.
