Can I implement voice chat without H.323 or SIP? Is it really mandatory that I should use H.323 or SIP for implementing VoIP-based chatting?

Skype is a good example of a client that allows for voice communication without using H.323 or SIP. One of the main reasons for considering SIP (or even H.323) would be ease of interoperability with clients and devices from other suppliers.
