Almost every supplier of VoIP equipment today is supporting the DiffServ approach to prioritize certain traffic when it traverses the Internet. The IntServ/RSVP approach never really took off in the industry. DiffServ only works if every provider in the path of a call supports it and prioritizes the traffic accordingly. This is typically not the case.

In reality, even without any QoS mechanisms enabled, the quality of most VoIP calls is close to the quality on the PSTN and matches the quality provided by the GSM network. In cases where there is network congestion or other problems in the Internet, the quality can degrade, but this is similar to the quality degradation that many of us accept every day on the mobile network.
