P2P is a different technology than SIP or the older H.323. As for costs and equipment, that varies by manufacturer and technology. From what I am seeing, the majority of systems are using SIP. There are several advantages to SIP including URL dialing, universal mailboxes and interoperability between manufacturers. I am not a big fan of P2P outside of residential or light commercial applications. Although as a global business traveler that likes to call home - I love P2P technology as I can use the softphone feature and incur NO charges. It is awesome! But for business applications, I think (please note that this is MY opinion) the H.323 and SIP technologies provide a better feature set. Costs and equipment will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Quality and robustness vary as well.
